Preventative Heart Care

Know Your Heart - Self-Directed Tests

Heart disease often develops silently, but early detection can save lives. Mercer Health offers two quick, painless screening options—Heart Score CT Scans and Vascular Ultrasound Screenings—that can identify early signs of heart or vascular disease, sometimes years before symptoms appear.

These screenings are offered as Direct Access Testing.

  • No provider referral required
  • Self‑pay services (not billed to insurance)
  • Appointment required
  • Performed at Mercer County Community Hospital in Coldwater

To schedule, please call 419-678-5112. For your convenience, you may complete the screening form prior to your appointment.

Heart Score CT Scan

Cost: $80 self‑pay
Referral Required: No
Appointment Required: Yes

A Heart Score CT Scan, also known as a coronary calcium scan, measures the amount of calcium in the walls of your heart’s arteries. Calcium deposits indicate plaque buildup, which can narrow arteries and increase the risk of heart disease or heart attacks. This quick, non-invasive CT (computed tomography) scan provides crucial insights into your heart health.

Who Should Consider a Heart Score CT Scan?

Recommended for men age 40+ and women age 45+ with one or more of the following risk factors:

  • Hypertension
  • High Cholesterol
  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Tobacco use
  • Family history of heart disease

This screening is intended for asymptomatic patients as a screening tool. If you are experiencing symptoms, please consult your provider to determine the most appropriate diagnostic test.

Vascular Ultrasound Screening

Cost: $50 self‑pay
Referral Required: No
Appointment Required: Yes

A Vascular Ultrasound Screening, often referred to as a Stroke Prevention Screening, evaluates vascular function to help detect early warning signs of vascular issues such as stroke, peripheral artery disease, and abdominal aortic aneurysm. They can also help identify those at increased risk of heart attack. This painless, non‑invasive screening helps detect vascular concerns before they become serious.

What’s Included in the Vascular Screening Package?

  • Carotid Arteries Ultrasound – Checks for plaque buildup and helps identify the risk of stroke.
  • Abdominal Aorta Ultrasound – Screens for the presence of an aneurysm that could lead to a ruptured aorta.
  • Peripheral Arteries Ultrasound – Measures circulation to the legs to help detect peripheral vascular disease, which is also an indicator of heart disease.
