Still Not Sure Where to Go?

Emergency Care

When should I go to the Emergency Room?

The Emergency Room (ER) should not be your first stop unless it’s a true emergency. Knowing when to seek emergency care can help you get the right treatment without unnecessary delays.

Go to the ER for:

  • Life-threatening or disabling conditions
  • Severe shortness of breath
  • Cuts or wounds that won’t stop bleeding
  • Sudden or unexplained loss of consciousness
  • High fever with stiff neck, confusion, or trouble breathing
  • Major injuries
  • Chest pain, facial numbness, arm or leg weakness, or difficulty speaking
  • Coughing up or vomiting blood
  • Possible broken bones

If you need medical care but it’s not an emergency, you have several options to get the help you need:

Going to the ER might seem like the best option, but in many cases, you have other choices that can save you time, money, and unnecessary stress. While urgent situations require prompt attention, an urgent care center is designed for medical issues that need immediate treatment but are not life-threatening.

Other Care Options:

  • Call your doctor. Your provider’s office can help determine whether you should visit an urgent care center or schedule an office appointment.
  • Visit Urgent Care. Urgent Care provides quick treatment for non-serious issues and is open late at night, weekends, and holidays. Learn more at Urgent Care.

  • Fever over 101.5°
  • Animal or insect bites
  • Cuts requiring stitches
  • Eye infection or irritation
  • Sprains or strains
  • Suspected broken bone (not shifted or out of place)
  • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
  • Urinary tract infection (UTI)

Walk-Ins Welcome, but Appointments Recommended

Walk-ins are always welcome, but scheduling an appointment can help reduce wait times and ensure you receive timely care. Patients are encouraged to book ahead using Mercer Health MyChart or by calling 419-586-1611. When scheduling, you’ll be pre-screened to determine the best care option for your needs.

Care Advice:

  • Call your doctor. Your provider’s office can help determine whether you should visit an urgent care center or schedule an office appointment.
  • Your primary care provider knows you and your medical history and is most likely the most cost-effective visit.
  • If you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 911.
