Earlier this year, Mercer Health’s Surgery Center had the honor of being part of a life-altering journey for a young girl from Africa. Brought to the United States on a medical visa through Children’s Medical Missions West, Dr. Jeff Otte, Chief of Staff at Mercer Health, was able to perform a distal femur procedure. Smith and Nephew generously donated the necessary plate and screws for the surgery.
As Oscar Wilde once said, “The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention.” This profound act of kindness highlights the commitment and dedication of everyone involved in this incredible journey.
The first surgery at Mercer Health Surgery Center took place in February of 2023. The young girl was able to return home to recover between surgeries. She recently returned to the Mercer Health Surgery Center to have her plate and screws removed in October of 2024.
Betsy Beckman, Director of Surgery at Mercer Health stated “The young girl is doing well and has returned home to her family in Africa. It was amazing to know that Mercer Health had such an impact on this child’s life.”
