Summer Internship & Exploration Program

Mentoring Future Healthcare Providers

The Mercer Health Summer Internship & Exploration Program is designed for college students who are considering applying to medical school and who will have completed at least two years of college by the time the program begins. A $1,000 stipend will be provided to each student who successfully completes the program. This program takes place annually in June.

Priority selection will be given to graduates of a Mercer County or adjacent‑county school system, as well as to applicants who demonstrate a strong local tie to Mercer Health and our surrounding communities.

Opportunity to learn from local physicians.

  • Physicians will share their experiences, life paths, what steps they took to get where they are, lifestyle of a physician, pros and cons.
  • Students will rotate through a variety of areas which may include family practice, emergency medicine, surgery, radiology, orthopedics and others. A personalized curriculum will be developed for each student. Students must provide their own transportation.
  • The program will be approximately 4 weeks in length. A one-day orientation will be scheduled after students are selected. (NOTE: Prior to orientation, students will be contacted and asked to complete a variety of protocols required for interning at Mercer Health, including a background check, submission of medical records and a tuberculosis test.)

Helping students make informed decisions.

The goal of this internship program is to help students make an informed decision about applying for medical school. The experience may also be valuable throughout the medical school application process.

The program will take place at Mercer Health Medical Group offices and hospital based departments. A personalized curriculum will be developed for each student which will determine exact locations.

“The summer internship and exploration program offered me valuable insights to the different types of doctors practicing in our rural area. I am grateful for the experience, advice and knowledge the physicians provided as I apply to medical schools!”
