From the earliest stages of pregnancy, Mercer Health provides educational opportunities to help with the childbirth experience. All classes are taught by qualified and experienced instructors in an informal classroom atmosphere that encourages participation.
Childbirth Education Classes
Our childbirth education classes are designed to prepare expectant parents for labor, delivery, and care of the new mom and baby following delivery. Our goal is to eliminate the fear of the unknown. We provide information on the stages of labor, pain management, relaxation, hospital interventions, after delivery care, and newborn care. In fact, a great deal of our last class is dedicated to the care of the baby. A tour of the birthing center will be included. Both weekly and weekend sessions are available throughout the year.
Breastfeeding class provides a basic understanding of breastfeeding. Parents are given information on how to get breastfeeding off to the best start. Class is taught by our board certified lactation consultant who is available after class to discuss any questions more in depth. This class is recommended for first time breastfeeding mothers and mothers who did not meet their breastfeeding goals in the past. Support people (fathers, grandmothers, sisters) are encouraged to attend class with the mother to be.
Breastfeeding classes are free to mothers who will be delivering here and are offered every month from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Register Online to see dates available.
Big Brother/Big Sister Class
The joy and anticipation of a new child coming into the family is shared with other siblings in the Big Brother/Big Sister program. This 45 minute presentation is designed for children 3 years old and older who will be getting a new brother or sister. In addition to helping them ease their anxieties, Mercer Health provides information to them about diapering, bottle feeding, safety and other important areas to help them feel like special big brothers/big sisters.
Baby Massage Class
Our certified infant massage instructors are trained in teaching techniques on infant massage. Infant massage helps babies sleep better and helps to relieve colic, gas and constipation. It also soothes baby and helps to reduce baby's crying. For more information, contact the Childbirth Center at 419-678-5670.
New Mom Education Series
This bi-monthly educational series for new moms covers a variety of topics covered by expert presenters. Q&A and open discussion time follows the brief presentation. The group meets on Monday evenings at 6:30 p.m. at Mercer Health West Campus (830 W. Main St., Coldwater). Registration is not required, but RSVP is encouraged. RSVP to email@example.com.
