Mercer Health has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® and the American Heart Association’s Heart-Check mark for Acute Heart Attack Ready Certification. The Joint Commission’s Acute Heart Attack Ready Certification recognizes hospitals that meet standards denoting the highest level of commitment to consistent and optimal heart attack care. The mission of the Acute Heart Attack Ready program at Mercer Health is to provide exceptional, timely, and evidence-based treatment for those suffering from life-threatening heart attacks.

An interdisciplinary team dedicated to improving cardiac care spent months developing enhanced policies, programs, and procedures to prepare for a rigorous onsite review on June 7. During the visit, a Joint Commission reviewer evaluated Mercer Health’s compliance with related certification standards including the delivery and facilitation of evidence-based care spanning from initial symptom onset to potential transfer to a larger hospital. The reviewer also conducted onsite observations and interviews with staff.

“Acute Heart Attack Ready Certification recognizes health care organizations committed to fostering continuous quality improvement in patient safety and quality of care,” says Mark Pelletier, RN, MS, chief operating officer, Accreditation and Certification Operations, and chief nursing executive, The Joint Commission. “We commend Mercer Health for using certification to reduce variation in its clinical processes and to strengthen its program structure and management framework for cardiac patients.”

“We congratulate Mercer Health for this outstanding achievement,” says Nancy Brown, American Heart Association CEO. “This certification reflects its commitment to providing the highest quality of care for cardiac patients.”

“The Acute Heart Attack Ready certification is a testament to our staff’s dedication to providing our community with safe, quality emergency care and affirms that Mercer Health is following the latest evidence-based guidelines for cardiac care,” Jenny Conn, RN, Director of Emergency Services, said. “It also recognizes that, as an organization, we are continually working to improve the care we provide to our patients.”
