Robert Keighley, M.D., was recently awarded the Volunteer Faculty Award by Boonshoft School of Medicine at Wright State University for his time and effort to further the program’s mission without compensation. According to a statement from Wright State University, this award annually recognizes select faculty who volunteer their time and effort to further the mission of the medical school without compensation and who exhibit a strong commitment to teaching, while serving as role models to medical students.

Dr. Keighley, general surgeon, was nominated by Lori Martensen, director of the Wright Rural Medical Scholars program, his reputation among students as an outstanding preceptor, which has helped to advance the Rural Medical Scholars program.

“When a preceptor provides an exceptional learning experience, students talk” Martensen says. “This talk not only led to more requests for placement with Dr. Keighley, but a greater interest in rural medicine from our medical students.”

Dr. Keighley has precepted twenty-four BSOM students to date. According to one of his former students, “Dr. Keighley is a phenomenal preceptor. He has easily made surgery one of my favorite rotations and has created an environment that allows for maximal learning. He is one of the best preceptors that I have worked with.”

Dr. Keighley practices at St. Marys Surgical Associates with office locations in St. Marys and Coldwater and operates at Mercer County Community Hospital.
