Position Title:  Director of Surgical Services
Reports To:  Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer

Role Summary

The Director of Surgical Services is responsible and accountable for the management and evaluation of care delivered by nursing personnel in the Surgery Center including Operating Rooms, Post-Anesthesia Care Unit, Same Day Surgery, and Sterile Processing Department on a 24-hour basis.  They are responsible for identifying the needs of the department and for initiating changes needed to assist the staff to provide quality patient care and services.  This individual participates in the hiring and orienting of staff and guides their ongoing development.  The incumbent selects and allocates resources to enhance and maintain cost effective patient care, and develops and monitors area budgets. This role requires collaboration and establishment of good working rapport with other members of the healthcare team to achieve maximum productivity and efficiency. This is a full time salaried position, primarily dayshift with the flexibility to meet the departmental needs of patients and staff.

• Conducts effective staff conferences; accepts responsibility for meetings and unit activities; maintains direction and follow-up with decided plan that improves patient care.
• Leads/delegates group activities to solve problems or accomplish specific tasks.
• Evaluates health care delivery by: Identifying opportunities for improvement, seeking resolutions, implementing change, and assessing progress and evaluating outcome in collaboration with appropriate personnel.
• Coordinates management, teaching, consultation, and support to individuals and their families.
• Systematically analyzes clinical practice through data collection, interpretation, and reporting of findings with appropriate recommendations.
• Assures that customers are treated in a professional manner with tact, courtesy, and respect.
• Assumes leadership role promoting nursing philosophy, purpose, goals, and objectives.
• Demonstrates the ability to initiate and lead interdisciplinary groups that promote improved patient care and utilizes recognized standards as the basis for care improvements.
• Participates in the development of policies, procedures and standards; and supports and assists in the implementation of these.
• Ensures staffs’ competency by assuming responsibility for providing education and/or arranging for learning activities and documentation of such education.
• Facilitates open exchange of ideas between peers, management, and staff; creatively responds to and evaluates suggestions for improvement.
• Prepares and gives performance evaluations in a timely manner; assists personnel in developing and achieving goals.
•  Serves on committees or task forces that impact healthcare for the purpose of providing input and bringing information back to staff; participates in community and outreach activities.
• Contributes to the management of the department’s resources to ensure safe, efficacious, and cost-effective care.
• All other duties as assigned.

• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
• BSN required
• Current, unencumbered Ohio RN licensure
• Minimum 2 years OR/ PACU Nurse experience
• Minimum 2-3 years progressive leadership/ managerial experience preferred.
• ACLS certification within 6 months of hire
• AORN certification a plus
• Knowledge about the complexity of care required for pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative patients of all ages as well as a familiarity with special procedures
• Knowledge about AAMI standards and instrument reprocessing a plus
